Enhancing water flux without sacrificing selectivity has been an ever-standing goal for water treatment membrane that is yet to be achieved. Here, we combine unique properties of carbon nanotube with a CNT densification technique to arrive at a membrane system in which higher water flux is accompanied by better selectivity. In this densified outer-wall CNT membrane, water flows through the pores formed by interstices between CNTs. With densification of CNTs, the pore size is easily controllable between 7 nm and 38 nm, resulting in better selectivity, and yet the water flux increases. Also, the water flux of the CNT membrane is increased with opening the CNT cap by plasma etch. Anti-biofouling capability of CNTs is much enhanced with the outer-wall membrane, compared with commercial PTFE membrane. |
