A novel diacetylene and azobenzene based amphiphilic supramolcule (DAAS) was newly designed and synthesized via Steglich esterification reaction. Chemical structures and purities of AAS and its intermediates were confirmed by NMR, MALDI-ToF, and EA mass analysis. Without the conventional polymer-based liquid crystal (LC) alignment process, a DAAS was successfully applied as a robust photo-reversible LC alignment layer by self-assembly and photo-polymerization. The peculiar trans to cis and cis to trans photo-isomerization process of azobenzene group was very useful and attractive for electro-optical devices. Furthermore, once-formed crosslinked structure of photo-polymerized diacetylene group is stable enough to overcome strong thermal fluctuations of LC.
