The effect of morphology and state of water on the membrane transport properties of in-situ hybridized Nafion115/ORMOSIL (Organically Modified SILicates) proton conductors is investigated as a function of silane hydrophilicity. The following three contrast silanes are introduced in decreasing order of hydrophilicity: tetraethoxy silane (TEOS), methyl triethoxy silane (MTES), and diethoxy dimethyl silane (DEDMS). To focus exclusively on the silane hydrophilicity, a pre-requisite condition assuring that the same concentration of silanes should be immersed into Nafion115, is fulfilled on the basis of silane diffusion behavior. Transport properties are discussed in terms of the morphological change and the number of free water molecules acting as an effective proton-carrying medium. |
