Polymer hydrogel is three dimensional polymer networks containing a large amount of water inside its network structure. Hydrogel is a fascinating material for stimuli-response capability, low surface friction, shock-absorbing function, and for its possible application in many fields. Unfortunately, the weak, brittle mechanical characteristic of conventional hydrogels hinders the extensive use of the gels. So double network (DN) hydrogel, as one of tough hydrogel, with extremely high mechanical performance has been developed. In this study, the new type of DN gel, alginate-acrylamide hybrid hydrogels have been prepared. It suggests that the hydrogels show high toughness from the synergy of two mechanisms: crack bridging by the covalently cross-linked polyacrylamide network and energy dissipation by unzipping ionic cross-links in the alginate network. As the alginate contents change, the elastic modulus, elongation ratio, and fracture energy of the hydrogels are measured. |
