A novel diamine, bis(3-aminophenyl)-4-(1-adamantyl)phenoxyphenyl-phosphine oxide (mDAATPPO), was synthesized via Williamson ether reaction from 4-(1-adamantyl)phenol and bis(3-nitrophenyl)-4-fluorophenyl phosphine oxide, followed by reduction. The latter compound, 4-(1-adamantyl)phenol, was prepared via Friedel-Crafts reaction of 1-bromoadamantane and phenol, while the former, bis(3-nitrophenyl)-4-fluorophenyl phosphine oxide, was synthesized via Grignard reaction, followed by nitration. The structure of monomer and intermediate compounds were characterized by FT-IR, NMR and melting point apparatus. The monomer was utilized to prepare polyimides with 6FDA, BTDA and ODPA via a conventional two-step synthesis; preparation of poly(amic acid), followed by solution imidization. The molecular weights of polyimides were controlled to 20,000 g/mol by off-stoichiometry. The polyimides were characterized by FT-IR, NMR, GPC, TGA and DSC, and solubility, intrinsic viscosity, dielectric constant and refractive index were also measured. |
