Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) is a representative temperature responsive hydrogel, which shows lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. We have modified the chemical structure of the PNIPAm based polymers, achieving hydrogels capable of programmable thermal behavior. We could prepare the multi-components copolymers having a compositional gradient by slow addition of the monomers in the reaction mixture. Prepared copolymers exhibit nearly linear transmittance change over a wide temperature range, yielding a switchable glazing of gradual solar control in response to the sunlight intensity. Furthermore, PNIPAm-graft-methylcellulose (MC) was prepared, which exhibtis the large thermal hysteresis in its volume change. Programmable volume phase transition could be triggered by visible light irradiation and excessive cooling, which can be used to fabricate the static motion actuator. |
