제목 A systems biology approach to discovery and production of secondary metabolites
초록 Microbial secondary metabolites, includin those found in actinomycetes, are considered as a great source of novel drugs such as antibiotics and anticancers. Accurate understanding of biosynthetic gene clusters and metabolic pathways is essential for the discovery and production of secondary metabolites. However, they overall remain poorly characterized due to the highly complex biochemistry involved, and require specialized computational tools for better understanding. Systems biology aims at understanding biological systems (e.g., cells) at global scale by using various computational tools and methods, and can be considered to tackle this demanding challenge. To this end, an array of computational tools and methods will be discussed that can facilitate discovery and production of secondary metabolites, including metabolite essentiality, antiSMASH, MIBiG and others. They were developed to identify novel antibiotics for the combat against multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens.
