Cholesteric liquid crystals are chiral phases with local nematic order but where the orientation of the main molecular symmetry axis (the director) varies in a helix-like fashion in space. In the helical cholesteric structure, the director is everywhere perpendicular to the helix axis. The spatial period (the pitch) is determined by the concentration and helical twisting power of chiral molecules, and it can be as short as visible light wavelengths, giving rise to colorful iridescence. Because the pitch is sensitive to many external stimuli, cholesterics are highly useful for sensors and indicators. In this work, we produced core-sheath polymer microfibers with cholesteric LC core and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) sheath by the electrospinning method. By varying the components of the core mixture we can tune the cholesteric pitch and by including reactive mesogens and crosslinkers we can produce cholesteric elastomer fibers with potential to respond to mechanical stimulation. |
