Nanocomposites are a new class of materials with improved properties, such as thermal, mechanical and barrier properties, than those of conventional composites due to much stronger interfacial forces between the dispersed nano-sized domains and the matrices. In the present study, polyurethane-silica nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization: the NCO-terminated prepolymers, prepared by reacting a mixture of poly(tetramethylene glycol) and fumed nanosilica with 4.4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, were chain-extended with 1,4-butanediol. The nanosilica(AEROSIL R972) particles were well dispersed in the polyurethane matrix up to 3 wt% . Introduction of the nanosilica into the polyurethane enhanced both tensile strength and elongation of the resulting nanocomposite films. Especially, the elongation at break of the nanocomposite films was measured to be about four times of that of pure polyurethane films. |
