Bone healing is one of the importance phenomena in clinical fields including oral, maxillofacial, orthopedic, and plastic surgeries. In general, a major obstacle in bone healing involves the rapid appearance of connective tissue. The presence of connective tissue at the bone defect site prevents osteogenesis, resulting in the incomplete bone formation having low mechanical strength and cartilage like tissue. To overcome this problem, guide bone regeneration (GBR) membranes which can prevent connective tissue infiltration into the bone defect, and thus allow sound bone regeneration has been utilized in clinical fields. In this study, we developed a GBR membrane with unique structure, which may fulfill the fundamental requirements of GBR membrane, as well as allow the sustained release of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) without any specific modification for effective bone regeneration. Their morphology, mechanical property, wettability, and BMP-2 release profile were investigated. |
