Effective Removal Mechanism of Hexavalent Chromium by Polypyrrole |

The polypyrrole was studied as a hexavalent chromium adsorbent for aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of polypyrrole was superior to those of conventional adsorbents. We investigated the adsorption mechanism behind such excellent chromate adsorption of polypyrrole, employing physical/chemical properties analyses and the pH-dependent adsorption behavior, supported by the first-principles calculation. We reveal that the pH-dependent fractional deprotonation of the pyrrolic nitrogen sites by the Jones oxidation reaction-like reaction played a pivotal role in the adsorption. |
