Imidazolium–PEG-Sebacate Copolyesters: Structure-Property Relationships in Thermal Behaviors |

The series of copolyesters containing a imidazolium cation backbone were synthesized from bis–(ω-hydroxyalkyl)imidazolium salts (PF6- or Tf2N-) (0.5 eq), poly(ethylene glycol) (1000 or 2000) (0.5 eq) and sebacoyl chloride (1.0 eq). The imidazolium salts are room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The ratio of the imidazolium units and poly(ethylene glycol) was confirmed by NMR studies showing 1:1 ratio of imidazolium and poly(ethylene glycol) protons. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements revealed that the longer poly(ethylene glycol) as well as the alkyl chain length of imidazolium-moeities results in crystallization during a heating scan. Thermal stabilities of the synthesized copolyesters were also confirmed by TGA and the copolyesters are stable up to 300 oC. |
