Polydopamine coating is the first surface chemistry that functionalizes virtually all material surfaces. We have developed a novel polydopamine surface chemistry that was modified to exhibit surface-selective properties. This newly developed method was possible by utilization of different solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/phosphate buffered saline co-solvent, instead of conventional aqueous solvent. Polydopamine coating was largely inhibited on silicon-containing surfaces such as Si wafers and quartz crystals in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) / phosphate buffered saline (PBS) co-solvent, while the coating properties on other materials remained unchanged. We have utilized this coating on gold patterned silicon oxide chip to successfully pattern polydopamine onto only the gold patterns while avoiding the base silicon oxide substrate. This research opens a whole new field of polydopamine surface functionalizations. |
