The Acetylation of Cellulose and their Transparent Films |

The aim of this study was to improve the transparency and interfacial adhesion among a biodegradable polymer or compatibilizers by a chemical modification of cellulose. Hydroxyl groups of cellulose were substituted by acetylation in order to achieve a good dispersion in organic solvents. The acetylated cellulose was combined with polylactic acid (PLA) in organic solvents followed by film casting. FTIR-ATR spectroscopy indicated that the hydroxyl groups of cellulose were substituted by acetyl groups. The morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The thermal properties of cellulose were measured using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). By contact angle measurement, there was indicated that the innate hydrophilic character of cellulose was changed into hydrophobic. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were carried out by universal testing machine (UTM). |
