Nanocrystals of sodium tungstates were synthesized by utilizing a hydrothermal method at temperature of 200℃ for 24 hours in the presence of poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) to control the size of the crystals at the time of their growth. The length of the nanorods was significantly varied, ranging from 400 nm to 6 μm, while the diameters were varied only slightly, ranging from 200 to 270 nm. These results show that the polyelectrolyte with sulfonate effectively caps the specific crystal planes or provides steric hindrance upon crystal growth, providing control over the size of the nanocrystals by varying the polyelectrolyte concentration.
