Phase Separation Mechanism Study for Polymer/Diluent/Solvent System |

The crystallization kinetics of thermally induced phase separation(TIPS) and nonsolvent induced phase separation(NIPS) were investigated for polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)/dibutylphthalate(DBP)/1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) system for the application of membrane preparation. DBP was used as a diluent and NMP as a solvent for PVDF. TIPS images of nucleation and growth of spherulite from homogeneous dope solution was successfully captured and analyzed by using hot stage and optical microscope. NIPS images were captured on contacting of dope solution with nonsolvent. Effects of relative composition of diluent to solvent in dope solution were examined. Effect of solvent addition was examined by isothermal crystallization. Effect of diluent addition was examined on NIPS mechanism by contacting the non-solvent. Results from mechanism study were correlated with the real membrane fabrication. |
