Polyimides can be widely used as a material for electro-optic devices owing to their advantages such as excellent thermal property, good mechanical property and electrical property, etc. In this study, alicyclic polyimides having alkylated succinimide group were synthesized from alicyclic dianhydrides like cyclobutane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic dianhydride [CBDA] or 5-(2,5-dioxo tetrahydrofuryl)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride [DOCDA] and novel functional diamines with alkylated succinimide group by two-step polymerization, which can be used for vertically aligned liquid crystal alignment layer. The polyimides cured at the temperature of 200~230℃ showed excellent electro-optic properties required for vertically aligned liquid crystal alignment layer as well as good transparency above 90%. In this presentation, we will also discuss relationship of chemical structure with pretilt angle and compare them with those of convensional liquid crystal alignment layer with linear alkyl side chain connected with ester group.
