Hydrogen Production by Aqueous Phase Reforming of Polyols over Nano- and Micro-sized Mesoporous Carbon Supported Platinum Catalysts |

Aqueous phase reforming (APR) of polyols for the production of hydrogen was carried out over nano- and micro-sized ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) supported platinum catalysts. The effect of their particle sizes of OMCs (rod type CMK-3 and hollow type CMK-5) on the catalytic reforming of polyols such as ethylene glycol and glycerol was investigated. The characteristics of the prepared catalysts were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, carbon monoxide chemisorption, and scanning electron micrograph. Compared to the micro-sized OMC supported catalyst, the nano-sized OMC supported catalyst showed better catalytic activity for the aqueous phase reforming of polyols; this discrepancy could be attributed to a synergetic effect of the higher pore size, pore volume, and the lower diffusion resistance of the prepared nano-sized Pt/OMC catalyst. Furthermore, Pt/CMK-5 with a hollow-type framework-configuration exhibited higher hydrogen yield and production rate than did the rod-type Pt/CMK-3. |
