Preparation and Characterization of Fucoidan-Chitosan Hydrogel Microparticle for Drug Delivery |

Recently, more and more protein drugs are being introduced into clinical trials because of advances in biotechnology allowing mass production of recombinant proteins. The purpose of this work was to develop and characterize a protein and peptide injectable drug delivery system using fucoidan-chitosan hydrogel microparticle. Fucoidan is a complex polysaccharide containing sugars and high amounts of sulphate derived from brown algaes. The fucoidan-chitosan hydrogel microparticle was prepared by using a coaxial spray drying method. Fucoidan (negatively charged) and chitosan (positively charged) form a polyelectrolyte complex in the microparticle. More specifically, fucoidan is used as a matrix to incorporate biomolecules and crosslinked/encapsulated by chitosan. In conclusion, this hydrogel microparticle may be a potential delivery of drug such as peptide and protein. |
