Hydrogels are crosslinked elastic networks of hydrophilic polymers, which can absorb large amounts of water. Since the hydrogels can also undergo volume phase transitions in response to external stimuli, they are widely studied in chemical and biological application. Particularly, thermally responsive hydrogels containing photothermal materials have provided efficient platforms for controlling the volumes or shapes of hydrogels in response to the light radiation. By modification of the chemical structures of the hydrogels and photothermal materials, we could control the light-induced volume change of the hydrogels. Based on these developments, we have successfully fabricated the photo-actuators, smart windows, and on-demand drug delivery system. |
