Diblock copolymers composed of two immiscible polymers form various self-assembled nanostructures such as spheres, cylinders and lamellae. In a selective solvent for one of the blocks, diblock copolymers self-assemble into micelles with a soluble corona and an insoluble core. Both PS-P4VP and PS-P2VP diblock copolymers form micelles with PS coronas and P4VP cores or P2VP cores in toluene which is a selective solvent for the PS block. When PS-P4VP micelles and PS-P2VP micelles are mixed in toluene, these two different micelles do not hybridize but mix homogeneously in the micellar state. In this study, films of micellar mixtures were exposed to THF vapor, which is a solvent for both PS and P2VP blocks, but a non-solvent for the P4VP block. During THF annealing, PS-P4VP micelles remained intact while PS-P2VP micelles were transformed to lamellar multilayers. Nanostructures in such composite films of lamellae and micelles were investigated by cross-sectional TEM as well as AFM. |
