Combining the actuator with both hydrogel and photonic crystal, color- and shape-tunable 1D scroll and 3D spiral photonic actuators were constructed. Utilizing selective swelling as a driving force in various chemical solvents, color and shape of photonic actuators can be tuned. When the photonic actuator is selectively swollen in a chemical solvent, the actuator represents various colors depending on viewing directions. Depending on the structure and constitution of materials, 3D spiral photonic actuators were also constructed. We also demonstrated that 3D actuators such as cube, pyramid, and phlat ball can be fabricated. These reversible spiral photonic actuators can be useful as mechanical, electrical devices, and optical components. |
