Molecular Aggregation Structure Analysis of Fully or Partly Aromatic Polyimide Thin Films by Synchrotron Grazing Incidence Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering |

The intermolecular aggregation structures of fully aromatic polyimides (Ar-PIs) and semialiphatic polyimides (Al-PIs) were characterized by GIWAXS technique. The aggregation structures of both Ar- and Al-PI thin films on Si substrates were a mixture of ordered and disordered domains. For Ar-PIs with glass transition temp. (Tg) higher than the imidization temp. (Ti) , the aggregation structures are significantly influenced by the 3-D structures of the PI chain. Rodlike molecular structures with high planarity are required for the growth of ordered domains of Ar-PIs, whereas an Ar-PI having bent nonplanar structure shows highly amorphous characteristics. The bulky -CF3 in the diamine moiety increase the interchain distance in the ordered domains. For Al-PIs with Tg lower than Ti, the degree of interchain ordering was higher than those of Ar-PIs, but was decreased significantly by decreasing Tg, due to the vigorous motion of PI chains during thermal imidization. |
