Illite and carbon nanotubes(CNT) used as reinforcement in epoxy composites are surface treated by direct fluorination to enhance thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy composites. Surface of illite and CNT are investigated by x-ray spectroscopy(XPS). The epoxy composites reinforced surface treated illite and CNT are investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA), tensile test and impact test. The thermal stabilities of fluorinated illite/CNT epoxy composites are approximately 30% higher than raw epoxy. In addition, the tensile and impact strength of those composites are improved 59% and 18% than those of raw epoxy. It is believed that the effect of fluorination in illite and CNT provides efficient interfacial interaction in epoxy resin.
