Companies related to auto mobiles or air craft manufactures have been interested in structure adhesives since 1990s. Structural adhesives can replace welding, keep cars silent, and make steel-aluminium bind tight. Several components have been adopted to provide toughening effect as well as impact resistance for the adhesives such as CTBN modified epoxy resin, or core/shell nanoparticles. Beside the toughening agents, polyurethanes have been used for the purpose as well. In order to offer the toughness or impact resistance, we have prepared polyurethanes by reacting polytetrahydrofuran diol or polypropylene glycol with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) or isophorene diisocyanate. The synthesized polyurethanes were designed to have different molecular weights resulting in different physical properties. Here, the characteristics of the prepared polyurethanes will be discussed with GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography), viscometer, and FT-IR Data. |
