To improve the surface hydrophilicity of HDPE powders,a circulating fluidized bed plasma reactor was designed and HDPE powders was treated by oxygen gas plasma. The circulating fluidized bed plasma reactor provides low-pressure gradients, even dispersion of fine powders, and stable glow plasma can be lightened for plasma treatment under the selected conditions. The effects of treatment time, rf power and solid holdup on oxidation of HDPE powders have been determined. The chemical and physical properties of the modified surfaces were determined by using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), FTIR, and contact angle measurement. The surface property of HDPE powders is changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic by the oxygen treatment without change of bulk property. Therefore, the circulating fluidized bed plasma reactor can be successfully utilized for improvement hydrophilicity of polymer powders. |
