Multi-hydroxylated fullerenes or fullerenols are widely used for different applications and exhibit remarkable properties such as the ability to scavenge oxygen radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals. However, the solubility of fullerenols has not been systematically studied compared to that of C60 which restricts their application considerably. In addition, the solubility of fullerenols is comparatively unusual. After the synthesis before drying, fullerenols are soluble in water. However, after the drying process, they are rarely water-soluble. Here we report on the solubility of fullerenols in 35 solvents at room temperature. The relationship of the solubilities with the solvent properties such as the refraction index, dielectric constant, molecular size, Hildebrand solubility parameter, and H-bonding strength is also shown in this work. |
