Recent advances in bioinformatics and genomics have led to a new trend of doing biology-Systems Biology, which aims to understand, design, and even control biological systems. This trend has evolved metabolic engineering methodology from the traditional reductionistic approach to a systems-based approach that can better exploit biological complexity. Systematic and combinatorial approaches were proposed to efficiently probe the cellular network and rapidly identify effective targets for the engineering of desired metabolic phenotypes. In this presentation, the application of these proposed approaches will be discussed in the context of emerging biorefinery processes. |
