Poly(vinyl alcohol-b-styrene) (poly(VA-b-St)) amphiphilic diblock copolymers with different polystyrene components were prepared for the formation of micelles. The copolymer was prepared by the saponification of poly(vinyl acetate-b-styrene) (poly(VAc-b-St)), which was synthesized through successive telomerization of vinyl acetate with carbon tetrachloride as a chain transfer agent and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with styrene in the presence of CuCl/2,2'-bipy. The structure of poly(VA-b-St) diblock copolymers was identified by IR, 1H-NMR. Then the diblock copolymeric micelles were prepared by dialysis against water. From the dynamic light scattering measurements, the size of micelle formed was less than 100nm, and their size increases with the increase of the polystyrene components. The critical micelle concentration determined using fluorescence probing methods also increase with the increase of the polystyrene components and it is on the order of ∼1.0mg/l which is apparently an advantage in utilizing these micelle as drug carriers in an extremely diluted condition.
