Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and their copolymers have been in use since 1970s as synthetic biodegradable polymers. However, synthesis of block copolymers of PLA and PGA and their potential applications has not been fully explored yet. Present study is focused on synthesis of b-PLLGA copolymers without any solvent. Initially, a hydroxyl terminated PLLA was synthesized using 1, 4-butaindiol as initiator and stannous actoate as catalyst and then a pre-determined amount of glycolide was copolymerized then at elevated temperature using HO-PLLA-OH as macro-initiator. A series of A-B-A type triblock copolymers of L-lactide and glycolide (b-PLGA) was synthesized with an intrinsic viscosity ranges between 0.5 to 1.5 dl/g. The copolymers were investigated for solubility, microstructural analysis, and thermal properties and results revealed that the copolymers exhibit truly block type chain microstructure. |
