Ideal materials for bone fixation devices should have enough initial rigidity to stabilize bone for 6-12 weeks; moreover, once the bone has had time to heal, the mechanical stability should gradually decrease as the osteosynthesis increases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the in vivo degradation properties of PLLA rods as bone fixation devices. In this study, PLLA rods were manufactured by vacuum compression molding and solid-state extrusion technique. From these processes we accomplished the high strength PLLA rods. Extruded PLLA rods with diameter of 3.5 mm were inserted into pouches in the subcuteous tissue and at femur site of adult dogs. The 1-year in vivo degradation of PLLA rods was discussed by measurement of DSC, GPC, Instron |
