The remarkable electrical and thermal properties along with its mechanical stiffness, strength and elasticity, make graphene as one of the fascinating materials. The unique properties of graphene produced by biological modes have potential to provide innovative ecofriendly and safe applications. In the present study, we demonstrate a novel, low cost, environmentally safe process to produce a few layer graphene with a low defect ratio, maintaining the pristine graphite structure via sonication assisted liquid phase exfoliation of graphite using medicinal plant water extracts. The synthesized materials by a selected plant were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The graphene produced by extracts of plant Xanthium strumarium displayed similar characteristics to that of sodium cholate exfoliated graphene demonstrating absorption peak at 268 nm in UV-Vis spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy and Transmission electron microscopy micrographs exhibited the presence of few layer graphene in the samples. |
