Introduction, A novel application of silver polymer electrolytes to membrane material for separation of olefin and paraffin mixtures has been explored. Solid polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver ions such as AgBF4 and AgCF3SO3 and polymer solvents such as poly(2-ethyl-2oxazoline) (POZ) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) exhibit facilitated transport of propylene. The propylene permeance and its pure gas selectivity over propane increased from less than 0.1 gpu to 45 and from about 1 to 450, respectively. Further, such high permeance and selectivity were achieved at high feed pressures which is very important in practical applications. This high performance may be predominantly attributable to the extraordinary high loading of silver ions in POZ and PVP solvents, close up to 1:1 mole ratio of carbonyl oxygens to silver ions as demonstrated by spectroscopic and preliminary ab initio studies. |
