In the ABE fermentation, when butanol concentration in a broth exceeds a critical level, cell growth and production are inhibited due to the toxicity of the butanol, resulting in low productivity. As a solution, an integrated system of fermentation and adsorption was suggested to maintain the butanol concentration in the fermenter at low level by removing the butanol through adsorption. In this study, we have established a dynamic model of fermentation with in-situ butanol recovery (ISBR) system in which glucose and xylose are simultaneously consumed. A time-varying weighting factor is proposed to represent simultaneous uptake of sugars. To describe competitive sugar uptake, the factor includes terms that reflect relative concentrations and consumption rates of the two sugars. To get more reliable estimation results of model parameters, the development of the dynamic model proceeds as follows: 1) development of glucose-associated model using data from fermentation consuming glucose only 2) development of xylose-associated model using data from fermentation consuming glucose and xylose simultaneously 3) adjustment and validation of parameters through identifiability analysis. |
