Synthesizing comb polymers containing –SO3 for the applications of biomatrials |

Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to elucidate the structure and properties of amphiphilic comb polymer for control of cell adhesion on biomaterials. The comb polymers comprised of methyl methacrylate(MMA) backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate(HPOEM)/ poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate(POEM) side chains were synthesized for biomedical applications. Sulfonate groups were tethered to hydroxyl groups of the side chains to create hydrophilic surfaces. The structures of synthesized comb polymers were confirmed by FT-IR and NMR. Physical results were obtained from FT-IR, GPC measurement. The obtained results suggest the usefulness of these comb polymers as a coating or additive material to improve the blood compatibility of blood contacting devices. |
