We report a unique polymer electrolyte membrane, which conducts proton effectively above 100℃ without humidification. A series of poly(styrenesulfonate-b-methylbuthylene) (SnMBm) has been synthesized by varying the ion contents and molecular weight. To elevate PEMFC operating temperature above 100℃, water is replaced by imidazolium ionic liquid as a proton supplier. Our system is proved to be thermally and mechanically stable up to 180℃ and provides significant proton conducting under anhydrous condition. The higher proton conductivity has been achieved by increasing sulfonation level of SnMBm copolymers. Large amount of ionic liquid loadings give higher conductivity as expected. In particular, significant morphology effect is determined by combining SAXS and TEM. Namely the conductivity obtained with nanostructured SnMBm block copolymer is order of magnitude of higher then that obtained with Sn homopolymer lack of organization, at the same ionic liquid loadings. |
