In this study, the synthesis of cationic polymer nanofibers with embedded silver nanoparticles is presented. Poly[2-(tert-butylaminoethyl) methacrylate] (PTBAM) was utilized as a cationic polymer substrate to intensify the biocidal activity of the impregnated silver nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses showed that the as-synthesized nanofibers had diameters of ca. 40 nm and lengths up to ca. 10 μm. Furthermore, silver nanoparticles of approximately 8 nm in diameter were finely embedded within the PTBAM nanofibers. In addition, the nanofibers with embedded silver nanoparticles showed excellent biocial performance against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The biocidal performance of silver-embedded poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers exceeded silver-impregnated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers, because of the antibacterial properties of the PTBAM itself. |
