Efficient dosing of microbial quorum quenchers for biofouling control in MBRs |

Biofilm formation on the membrane surface is the major concern to be resolved in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). This is a natural process related to the microbes, governed by small diffusible quorum sensing (QS) signal molecules. It was reported that Rhodococcus sp. BH4 has the potential to degrade QS signal molecules (quorum quenching (QQ)). This study provides the comparison of different concentration of BH4 immobilised in the form of sheets to find the optimal QQ dose for effective fouling control in MBRs. Batch experiments were conducted to measure the activity of QQ sheets while analysing the AHL concentration on an indicating agar plate. Two identical lab-scale submerged MBRs with a working volume of 2 L were operated at a constant flux of 30 L/m2-h with solid and hydraulic retention times of 100 d and 7 h, respectively. The higher the QQ dose, the more the fouling delay.
