We have studied morphologies of ion-containing block copolymer micelles by varying ion concentration and molecular weight of the block copolymers using small angle x-ray scattering. A set of sulfonated block copolymers were synthesized and spherical micelles with different ionic domain sizes are successfully determined. Interestingly, it is found that the spherical micelles underwent morphological transition toward cylindrical shapes in the presence of electrical field. Such morphological transition has shown large influence on ionic conductivity, which was rationalized by different proximity of ionic groups. By combining dynamic light scattering and electrophoretic analysis, a unique relationship between ionic mobilities and ionic domain sizes were derived. |
