Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Copolymers: Effect of Inorganic Nanotubes on the Flammability Properties |

The effect of inorganic nanotubes and the intumescent flame retardant system in polymer composites based on acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers was investigated. A synergistic effect was observed between the halloysite nanotubes and the intumescent flame retardant system in the polymer composites. The different materials and precursors were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. The flammability properties were investigated by cone calorimeter tests. The intumescent flame retardant system in conjunction with the nanotubes enhanced the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the polymer composite. Thus, an improvement of the thermal stability and a reduction of the peak heat release rate of 56% was observed. It is assumed that the synergistic mechanism was caused by the formation of a silico-aluminophosphate structure through a reaction between the phosphoric acid that is generated on heating. |
