Electrochemical characteristics of activated carbon fiber based electric double layer capacitor by direct fluorination |

In this study, the surface of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) was modified by direct fluorination at room temperature with different F2 partial pressures to obtain electric double layer capacitors (EDLC). The fluorination changed the surface properties and pore structure of the ACFs and showed effects on the electrochemical properties. The specific capacitance, which was measured in a 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte at scan rates of 5 and 50 mV/s, increased significantly after fluorination at 0.1 bar. This capacitance enhancement was derived from a synergistic effect of the increased polarity that was induced by the formation of the fluorine functional groups and the change in the specific ACF surface area and micro and mesopore volume after fluorination. |
