Natural melanin compounds have conjugate backbone structures which can provide unique electronic conducting pathways. Thus, melanin from Sepia officinalis,s which may possess intrinsic biocompatibility and biodegradability, is a one of the most promising electronic materials for implantable electronic devices such as neural interfaces, pacemakers, and beyond. Thus, we made a melanin composites with conventional conducting polymers such as polyaniline (PANI) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). By controlling their coupling nanostructures, the conducting polymer composites showed tunable electrical and mechanical properties. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the resulting films were biocompatible enough for wide ranges of biomedical applications by showing its in vitro cell attachment test. |
