An experimental study was carried out to investigate effects of various factors such as concentrations in the feed and permeate, and feed pH on the recovery of sodium succinate by desalting electrodialysis. Through preliminary experiments, limiting current densities at various succinate concentration were determined. Those limiting current data were used to determine the switching time at which the operation mode was switched from a constant current to a constant voltage. The required operation time increased but the energy consumption decreased with the feed concentration. Changes in permeate concentration, on the other hand, hardly affected the performance of electrodialysis except for the cases of a very high permeate concentration. At those high permeate concentrations, operating time and energy consumption slightly increased with the concentration most probably because of back diffusion. A decrease in the pH have negative effects such as a low recovery and a high energy consumption, etc., because the portion of un-dissociated form of succinate increased. |
