Graphene, two dimensional layered structure of carbon atoms is interesting in ideal reinforced nanomaterial due to their excellent mechanical properties (Monolayer graphene has a Young’s modulus of 1 TPa and a tensile strength of 130 GPa) facilitating numerous potential applications. Recently, several groups reported to graphene/polymer and graphene/metal composite resulting in enhanced mechanical properties. However, the limited control mixing process and the use of low quality graphene flake without precise reinforcement mechanism make it difficult to achieve the true mechanical properties of nano-composites. In this research, we propose a new approach by molecular-level mixing process and spark plasma sintering process to avoid the major problem of dispersion and thermal damage of graphene flakes during the synthesis of graphene/metal nano-composite. It also showed improved mechanical properties with the reinforcement effect of graphene in metal matrix nanocomposites. |
