The degree of crystallinity determined from the conventional DSC method is generally lower than that from the density and WAXS experiment. To explain this discrepancy, a linear polyethylene and several ethylene-1-olefin copolymers with varying co-unit types and co-unit contents were investigated. In this work, we show that the measured heat capacity data of a sample should be directly compared with the heat capacity of the pure crystalline phase and the pure amorphous phase at each temperature. The degree of crystallinity obtained from our method does not agree with that from the conventional total enthalpy method or that recently developed by Mathot et al., but is rather in good agreement with the value obtained from the density and WAXS experiments. |
