A shape memory polymer (SMP) is a smart material that can recover its original shape after being deformed into a temporary shape when it is heated or receives any other stimuli. In this study, we synthesized water-triggered shape memory polymers based on nylon 12-b-PEG multiblock copolymer consisting of PEG with Mn of 2k, 3k and 4k as a soft segment by melt polycondensation. Micro-fibers of nylon 12-b-PEG were prepared by electospinning method. The temporary shape of copolymer is fixed via strain-induced crystallization of PEG block. Upon immersion in water, water selectively diffused into PEG block, leading to the dissolving of PEG crystals and resulting in recovery of the original shape. The effects of the length of PEG block, sample thickness and material form on the water swelling and water-triggered shape memory behavior of nylon 12-b-PEG were investigated. |
