Encapsulation of Organic Photovoltaics by Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Layer Fabricated via Initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition and Atomic Layer Deposition |

Although organic photovoltaics (OPV) is emerging as one of the alternative energy generator, there exist two critical factors that withhold the commercialization of the device: the low efficiency and the low stability upon exposure to air. This paper focuses on the latter issue, investigating to fabricate an effective barrier film that encapsulates the OPV. This paper suggests another method of fabricating organic/inorganic hybrid layer for the encapsulation of the OPV. Initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) systems are used to produce the barrier film and the properties of the film are studied to validate the applicability to encapsulate OPV. The process was completely solvent-free as both iCVD and ALD are vapor phase deposition. The resulting film was highly transparent and caused no defection of light. The effective barrier performance was observed via calcium test and the lifetime of OPV was elongated significantly as well. |
