Dispersion Characteristics of Nanoparticles within Polymer Matrices |

Surface modification of inorganic nanoparticles(NP) with organic polymers is one way to realize inorganic NPs well-dispersed within polymer matrices. Polymers for the surface modification of NPs should thus have anchoring moieties along with main chain brushes which are compatible with matrix polymers. We prepared well-defined block copolymers consisting of polystyrene(PS) brush blocks with short disulfide anchoring blocks via RAFT polymerization, followed by the modification of three different shapes of inorganic NPs(dots, rods, and tetrapods). The modified NPs were then dispersed in PS homopolymers of different molecular weight and dispersion characteristics were quantitatively assessed with scattering experiments along with qualitative microscopic characterization. We found that the dispersion characteristics was mainly determined by the ratio of the degrees of polymerization of brush polymers to matrix polymers as well as the areal chain density of brush polymers. |
