Synthesis, Photoinduced Orientation and Liquid Crystal Alignability of a Polyimide Containing Azobenzene Side Groups |

A fully aromatic photosensitive poly(amic acid) bearing azobenzene side groups was synthesized with a reasonably high molecular weight from the polycondensation of an aromatic 4,4'-oxydi(phthalic anhydride) and a newly synthesized azobenzene containing diamine. The conventional thermal imidization process of poly(amic acid) provided good quality thin films. Both the dichroic ratio and optical retardation in the films were increased with increasing exposure dose of linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light (260-380 nm). Liquid-crystal (LC) cells were fabricated with the polymer film treated by various doses of LPUVL, and their polar diagrams were measured. The nematic LC molecules on the film were aligned at an angle of 110 with respect to the polarization of the LPUVL used in the UV exposure. This LC alignment was found to be thermally stable up to 210 C. |
