Recently, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)-based interpenetrated polymer network absorbent has shown great potential for crude oil entrapment and recovery in aqueous systems. However, the casting process typically used for preparation often results in materials with limited specific surface area (SSA) for effective absorption of oils with high viscosity. In this work, we utilize electrospinning technique to prepare LLDPE nanofibrous matrices with dramatically enhanced SSA values. We demonstrate that the LLDPE with low crystallinity (12%) allows facile and selective absorption of oils in aqueous systems while the nanofibrous structure with high SSA results in highly effective absorption of oil with even high viscosity. Moreover, the electrospun LLDPE nanofibrous matrix remains its shape after absorbing oil, facilitating the recovery of the used sorbent. |
